Blue Ocean Film Symposium
The Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival and Wesgro invites aspiring filmmakers to attend the Blue Ocean Film Symposium on ocean and adventure film making in Cape Town tomorrow.
The event, to be held at the Wave Theatre on Long Street at 11am to 2pm Wednesday, will comprise talks, panel discussions and audience Q&As for a day of career-entry mentorship and networking, with the ultimate goal to significantly boost the Western Cape as a filmmaking hub. This is the ideal opportunity for filmmakers who are in the latter stages of studying film, or in the early stages of their career, to get exposure to veteran and young voices from within the film industry who delve - or want to delve - into subject matter around building narratives for ocean, conservation, sustainability and adventure documentaries.
Director of the Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival Shani Judes said: “Young people are the future of filmmaking. This event encourages a vibrant and diverse future for the film industry in the Western Cape, which is such a unique and varied part of the natural world, with unbelievable biodiversity on land and in the ocean that needs to be protected.”
Several speakers will take the podium at the beautiful bioscope auditorium at the Wave Theatre in Long Street, including Head of Film and Media Promotion at Wesgro Monica Rorvik; Producer of the film Wild Coast Warriors Nick Chevalier; Cape Town Team Leader of Youth4Tourism Tshepiso Makoni; and Brett Eagle CEO of the Action Distribution group of companies at the cutting edge of film technology. AFDA Cape Town Bachelor of Creative Writing Lecturer Liana Hassim will talk about her journey as well as the educational work of AFDA.
After a break for networking and refreshment, a panel comprising the speakers will field questions from the audience. The symposium gives exposure to an eclectic industry that has a wide offering, while assisting filmmakers to grow their careers, thus feeding into a tactical plan by Wesgro to develop specific millennium development goals, while also adding value to the Made in the Cape initiative.
The Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival focuses on community upliftment, ocean conservation and surfing, which leverages the aspirational power of ocean and beach culture around the Western Cape to broaden a message of caring and compassion for the natural world.
In its 20th year, Wavescape offers ocean-focused events that include an open air film screening with The Galileo Open Air Cinema; a screening in the Deep South at Scarborough; beach cleanups; a queer surf session; the Wesgro Blue Ocean Film Symposium, and the annual flagship Wavescape Artboard Project, comprising an exhibition of artistic surfboards auctioned for ocean charities.
