La Muse this Weekend!

Friday 5 August 2022 This year’s bumper edition of La Muse Classic at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg from Saturday to Women’s Day on Tuesday is dedicated to surf Legend George Bunting, who passed away this week.

Diony Lalieu, who is assisting organisers this year in the wake of the tragic loss, said that the all-women event would honour "a man who gave so selflessly to develop the sport of longboarding among women and men, and to celebrate the men who have supported women in surfing over the years".

In the wake of the hiccups caused by pandemic lockdowns, La Muse, which is sponsored by @sisstrevolution, comes back with even greater fervour and more than 100 entrants. The four-day event marks its fifth anniversary, with "continued emphasis on inclusivity and sports-WOMANship", Lalieu said.

The surf forecast looks good for the last three days of the window period, but tomorrow looks terrible in pumping SE onshores. However, a SSW swell 2-3ft is filling into the bay on Sunday, with warm NE berg winds forecast. Dropping 2ft swell looks set for Monday in crisp clean N offshores, while a new SW groundswell and light NW offshore on Women's Day on Tuesday looks set for super fun 2ft lines.

La Muse celebrates women from all ages, races, and athletic ability who come together to enjoy the ocean. "Whether you are there to support family in the mother-daughters heat, test your personal confidence in the novice division, or send all ‘toes to the nose’ among some of South Africa’s longboarding finest, there is room for all," she said.

While the element of fun permeates the four days at the Corner, with yoga sessions, surf clinics, and the best prizes from so many generous sponsors, there is also a more serious focus on ‘giving back’. Every year, La Muse partners with Ocean Pledge to ensure that it is the only entirely single-use plastic-free surfing event.

All contestants get metal bottles, while a refill station keeps the plastic bottles at bay. Recycling services are also used to divert as much waste from land fill as possible

La Muse works with kids from various development organisations such as Waves for Change, 9Miles Project and SurfPop to grow the love for competitive surfing among all and helps to raise funds for Thula Baba, the project that equips mothers to care for their babies.
