Bodyboard History Right Here

Tuesday 23 August 2022 History is being made in the village of Onrus near Hermanus this week when the world's best bodyboarders contest the first IBC event to be held in Africa: the Walker Bay Pro.

The giant surf today has seen a lay day called, after riders from around the globe revelled in two days of pumping surf since the opening ceremony of the event last week to the sounds of the Botrivier Marimba Band at MILK ON THE BEACH cafe overlooking the beach at Onrus, when the famous Hermanuc Whale Crier toodled his horn to launch proceedings and bless the event and riders.

The Men’s round 1 got started over the weekend in challenging 6-8ft surf smashing the slab down the beach at Onrus. Lank people came down to sit on the grassy banks that line the rocks to lining support the stellar lineup of locals and international athletes.

Most of the first day saw low scores. However, Jeff Hubbard, Isabella Sousa and Benji Olivier found the best waves in their respective heats and were able to score 8 point rides. Local boy, Tristan Roberts, scored a 7.75 in his heat and achieved the highest total score of the Men's first round. The Junior riders all showed courage in the wild conditions with Hugo Naude and Brayden Hewitt dominating their heats and moving through to the next round.

The Women took on the heavy onshore afternoon conditions with no fear. Isabela Sousa, Alexandra Rinder and Sari Ohara got the biggest heat totals in each of their heats showing just how hungry each of them are for that World Tour title, which will be decided at the Walker Bay Pro 2022.

Day 2 presented the Walker Bay Pro 2022 with beautiful offshore conditions at Onrus yesterday. With a building swell pushing into the too big range, the morning saw Men’s Round 3 go down before competition was called off for the day.

The morning comprised numerous very close heats with the local riders pushing the international riders to the limit. Benji Olivier led his heat against 3 x World Champ Jeff Hubbard from early, and it looked liked Benji would eliminate the Hawaiian. Experience shone through as Jeff managed to snatch the win from Benji with a massive invert on his final wave in the dying seconds of the heat.

Tristan Roberts continued to show his local knowledge with some precise and technical riding – pulling a massive backflip in his heat to score 9 point ride and securing the highest heat total of the round. It was far from an easy heat as Wesley Coetzee pushed Tristan hard including a sizeable invert air during the heat.

Iain Campbell, Alan Munoz, Hugo Naude, Alex Nutt and Luke Bruton all advanced through to the next round by winning their heats. The Walker Bay Pro will probably resume tomorrow. It's going to be massive as a Women’s Bodyboarding World Champion will be crowned right here at the Walker Bay Pro 2022.

All four main contenders for the title are here, so its down to @IsabelaSousabb, @sariohhara, @neymaracarvalho or @alexandrarinder to take the very first Women’s IBC Bodyboarding World Tour Champion title.
